07/21 - A generous sprinking of U-turns across the course of Short Track Race # 7 forced racers - like Camas Bikes' Ca3 Men U35 racer Brady Stotts - to be on their toes and kept our course marshalls plenty busy re-setting all the toppled cones. (photo: Victor Duong)
07/21 - Six down, two to go! Check out the Call-Up List for tonight's Race # 7 and get ready for a fun race and another wild course (and slightly cooler temperatures). To spice things up, our bike shop series sponsor Cyclepath will throw in $10 gift certificates for tonight's "Holeshot Winner" in each race category and our title sponsor Hopworks Urban Brewery will sweeten the pot with a complimentary 22oz bottle of HUB organic ale for any holeshot winners over 21. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!
07/15 - Summer Casual rules! Thanks to everyone who came out to race and/or spectate and a shout to all the racers who dressed down and showed that Short Track racing is fun, no matter what threads you're sporting!
07/14 - Two very "Portland" interpretations of "Summer Casual" at yesterday's Short Track Race # 6: Staccato Gelato's Singlespeed racer Aaron Lee going for the refined urban/tweed look, while Metropolis Cycle Repair's Cat 2 Men U35 racer Stephen Hartzel (in the distance) is opting for the - arguably more weather appropriate - minimalist PDX hipster race attire. 07/12 - In good tradition and per popular request, it's time for our annual "Summer Casual" Race Outfit Contest, this year brought to you by Portland Design Works!
Leave the spandex at home and come race in your best Summer Casual race outfit. To get an idea of what we're talking about and get some inspiration for Monday, check out the photos of last year and the year before.
The most hilarious outfits (male & female) in each race heat (*) will win a very cool PDW "triple goodie package", consisting of an AetherDemon USB-rechargeable LED tail light, an Origami rear fender, and the most stylish bottle cage you've ever owned, aka The Bird Cage. So get the creative juices flowing.... anything goes, as long as it doesn't weird out any of the kiddie racers!
(*) Judging will be done based on the photos taken at the PDW Photo Booth (look for the Portland Design Works tent, which will be located under the trees).
07/12 - Winning!! Cammia Kalimanis (of Kalama!) is the lucky winner of last Monday's 10th Anniversary Grand Prime, a Shimano MTB wheelset donated by the Lumberyard. If you raced last week, click here to find out if you are among the other winners of our weekly raffle!
07/08 - What a great night yesterday to celebrate our 10th anniversary! Results of yesterday's race # 5 are up on OBRA and a first batch of action photos - shot by our series photographer Victor Duong - is up on flickr. Thanks to everyone who came out to race and/or spectate. We hope to see you back next week for more fun at our Casual Summer Race Outfit Contest!
07/07 - On a roll. Fresh from a podium finish at last week's Six Hours of Mt Hood, Cyclepath Racing's Julie Wilson is chasing hard to claim 2nd place in yesterday's Elite/Cat 1 Women race. Judging by her race plate number, it's only a matter of time before she'll take home 1st place for a third night this season. (photo: Victor Duong)
Local samba drum band Bloco Alegria will come out to entertain the start of each race heat with live music, Nossa Familia Coffee will be serving free iced and pour-over coffees, and our title sponsor Hopworks Urban Brewery will sample a variety of their delicious organic ales to anyone over 21.
Newbie Short Track racers (i.e. anyone who never raced the series before) and "old-timers" (anyone who raced the first edition of the Short Track Series back in 2005) will enjoy a $10 discount on the day-of-race race fee (i.e. $15 for adults, $5 for juniors). And for those who came late to the party this year, we'll be selling rest-of-series passes for just $70 ($30 for juniors).
Our food station will be serving our ever-popular free Dave's Killer Bread PB&J sandwiches, larabars and other healthy goodies, and to top it all off we will raffle off a Shimano MTB wheelset - generously donated by The Lumberyard - among everyone who comes out and race this Monday.
06/24 - Another great night of short track racing and another course that seriously rocked! Results of yesterday's races are up on OBRA. Stay tuned for photos and series standings after the first half of the series (which will count towards one set of BAR points).
06/23 - After a one-week hiatus, BikePortland.org racer Jonathan Maus got back in on the action and claimed the top spot in the Cat 2 Men 35-44 field. (photo: Victor Duong)
06/16 - Tonight was definitely something different! The major thunderstorm that passed over Portland around 3pm forced our course set-up crew to skip the motocross course and design a novel, fun and challenging course under the trees and across the grass and gravel. By the time we kicked off the races, the sun came through and the course turned out to be quite awesome. Results of tonight's race # 3 are up on OBRA.
06/16 - The Elite/Cat 1 Women are off for a 35' minute bout of short track fun under sunny skies and across a very different but equally fun course. (photo: Victor Duong)
06/12 - Never raced Short Track before, but like to give it a try? Have friends who you think should give Short Track a shot?... just come out this Monday (June 16) for our special "School's Out!" Junior & Newbie Short Track Night and bring your friends! All new short track racers (who've never raced a Portland Short Track Series race before) will enjoy $10 off the regular day-of-race fee and OBRA will waive the $5 single-day OBRA license fee for any non-OBRA members!... In other words, newbie junior racers can come race Short Track this Monday for just $5 and newbie adult racers pay only $15! In addition, we'll raffle off a bunch of cool prizes among all junior racers who come out and race!
06/03 - Last night, we kicked off the 2014 short track season with a new record "opening night" attendance of 420 racers (plus another 40 kiddie racers). Thanks to everyone who came out to partake in the fun and a special welcome to the more than 80 riders who raced short track for the very first time. We hope you all had a great time and are ready for more!
06/02 - Cat 1 Men 19-35 racers Spencer Bushmell and Tyler Bump, gearing up for another lap on the motocross course. (photo: Victor Duong)
05/30 - We are just 3 days away from our first night of racing and it looks like we are getting treated on gorgeous summer weather (sunny and highs in the low 70s) to kick off things! To find out who will be on deck this Monday, check out the call-up list for race # 1, with the 225 racers who purchased a series pass and will enjoy a start-line call-up each week. Online sales of our series pass has closed, but you can still purchase one at the race on Monday and get your name added to the call-up list for the rest of the series.
05/20 - Join us next Monday (Memorial Day) at the Lumberyard Indoor Bike Park for a fun evening of riding, socializing, and getting all dialed for the 10th edition of the Portland Short Track Series. (4pm to 10pm).
Come pick up your series race plate and ride the Lumberyard Indoor Bike Park for just $10 (from 4pm to 10pm) or come just watch the action (FREE) and socialize with fellow short track racers. There will be free riding clinics by Lumberyard instructors.
We'll raffle off a bunch of cool prizes among all racers who register or drop by anytime during the evening (you don't have to ride or stay around to win).
Our registration crew will be on-site selling series passes and single-night race entries for our first night of racing. And first-time adult Short Track racers will enjoy a special newbie discount (Series Pass: $20 OFF/ first-race entry fee: $10 OFF).
Finally, the Lumberyard Pub will be serving a $8 taco special (veggie option available) and will have HUB beer on tap!
04/21 - Get ready for the 10th edition of the Portland Short Track Series! That's right, Portland's signature summer bike race series (for young and old, newbie or hardcore, fat or cross tires) is upon us and will kick off in just 6 weeks! Same format as last year, but , with the support of Islabikes, we are expanding our free kids races with an extra category. Click here for all the details of the 2014 series!
